A Beginner's Guide to Skincare

Does your current moisturizer leave your skin feeling dry or irritated? Are you dealing with acne and don’t know how to get rid of it?

Whether you are shopping for a new skincare regimen for yourself or a special someone, it’s important to know the differences between men and women’s skincare and how to choose the right products for your skin.

Bringing it back to the basics and as cliché as it sounds, what you eat is what you are. If your goal is to keep yourself looking young and healthy, it’s important to eat healthy as well. By eating healthy, we don’t mean to avoid everything you love to eat, rather, small actions like cutting down on processed food and drinking more water can go a long way when it comes to clear skin.

It’s also important to understand your skin type. Whether it be dry, oily, or combination, it’s important to know in order to buy the correct products for your skin.

A good indicator is how your skin feels right after you wash your face. If you wash your face and dry it, if it feels a little tight after, you probably have dry skin. If it feels greasy, you probably have oily skin. You can also have a mix of both, where your forehead, nose and chin could be oily and your cheeks could be dry. This would mean you have combination skin.

But for those just getting started, here are some general steps that men of all skin types can follow.

  1. Cleanser. It’s important to wash off the grime from the day or dust particles from your bedroom after a good night’s sleep. Getting rid of this later can keep your skin clean and clear and prep it for moisturizer to keep the dirt away.
  2. Moisturizer. Once your face is clean and refreshed, the next step is to add a moisturizer or balm to keep your skin moisturized. Typically, men’s skin is thicker than women’s, which is why maybe that moisturizer that was gifted to you still leaves your skin feeling dry or not moisturizing enough and leading to breakouts.
  3. Sunscreen. To keep your skin clear and smooth for years, sunscreen is crucial in preventing UV damage. The more damaged your skin is, the more prone it is to leave scars and blemishes.

Another key point for a men’s skincare routine is exfoliating. Exfoliators remove the layer of dead skin cells and prevents your skin from clogging up, which can lead to breakouts and uneven skin tone.

It is especially important for men to exfoliate in comparison to women because of facial hair. Why is that you ask? That is because if you don’t exfoliate, the dead skin cells will build up and can cause ingrown hairs and make it more difficult to shave.

Now, onto the products we recommend!

If you’re just getting started into skincare, check out our Face First Bundle. It includes two great exfoliating faces washes (a great way to get exfoliation into your routine and keep it simple!) and our favourite face balm from Peregrine and Co.

We don’t currently carry any sunscreens in our shop, but we’d recommend the Hydroboost sunscreen from Neutrogena for dryer skin types, Neutrogena clear face sunscreen for oilier skin types, and the La Roche-Posay Broad Spectrum sunscreen for those with normal to sensitive skin.

Some other tips we have for clear skin.

Stress and anxiety can have negative effects for your skin. No matter how busy your life is, make time to relax! You can check out our Adessoman guide to relaxing blog post here.

Towels and pillowcases are in contact with your skin at it’s most vulnerable state. Meaning, keeping them clean and changing them often can have great benefits for those of all skin types.
