Neil Bosch, Director of Wealth Management at Richardson GMP, Talks Style, Finding Balance, and Authenticity

Neil Bosch is a busy guy. Not only is he the director of wealth management at Richardson GMP — a Canadian independent wealth management firm with offices across the country — but he is also a portfolio manager, branch manager, investment advisor and president of the Alpine Club of Canada. Even though his days can be quite long and hectic, he never skimps on his personal style. We wanted to learn more about Neil's style revolution and inspiration so we gave him a call!

What three things do you need to make it through the day?

"Strong coffee, polished shoes, and a full calendar. I am best while busy. Idle doesn’t suit me well. My advice for making it through the day is to stay organized and don’t be afraid to make decisions. Never dither."

What stores do you frequent when your wardrobe needs a refresh?

The places I shop at the most are Henry Singer, Holt Renfrew, Curtis Elliot, Harry Roses, and Simons. I only recently discovered adesso but am excited to ramp up my collection with their pieces!

How has your style evolved over the years?

Although my personal style has changed over the years, during the week you will usually find me wearing suits. But during the weekend, I completely morph into the weekend warrior that ranges greatly depending on what I am up to. I am most comfortable in jeans and a sports jacket but believe it is always better to be over-dressed than under. I am not really into chasing trends but believe in staying current and contemporary. For me, quality always trumps quantity.⠀⠀

What do you do to relax and unwind on the weekend?

"Mountaineering is where I find my mental space. It is humbling to realize how small we are when we stand on top of a mountain and look around. It always provides great perspective. While your climbing you really don’t have any choice but to focus on the task at hand, which is quite liberating because the rest of your life tends to disappear in the background. It is like a kind of meditation of sorts."

And how do you achieve balance and fulfillment in your life?

"I need to tackle a challenge to find fulfillment. I am very grateful to work for a company where I am a partner and strongly believe in our vision of independence. I am also proud to represent the members of the Alpine Club of Canada as their President, but mostly I always want to be a good husband, father, and friend. For me, the most important part of staying balance is to be able to compartmentalize and focus on the moment. This is not always easy, but when I am with my boys, I want to be the best father ever. I also strongly believe in giving back. We take so much for granted but there are always people that need support. Whether it be the Centre for Family Literacy or Dress for Success, I want to use what I know and the skills I have to give back in my own unique way."

In your opinion, what does it mean to be your true, authentic self?

"Every New Year I play a game with myself where I look at Neil from 10 years ago and 10 years in the future. In other words would the Neil from 10 years ago be happy with who I am today, and where do I want Neil to be 10 years from now? It is an interesting and introspective study of myself. I keep notes and write things down and review them from time to time. It is funny how my priorities have changed but one common theme is personal growth. The key to the study is being honest with yourself. There is only one of you to be interesting and take accountability for when you totally suck! Being authentic to me means being original. I want people to say 'thank god there is only one of that guy!'"

Last question, what are your top three tips for living the best life you possibly can?

"Be honest and direct. Do what you say. Have fun doing it."
