Beard Grooming 101: How to Keep Your Beard Looking Fresh

If you want to grow a beard then you need to know how to groom a beard, whether you're maintaining length or just doing a general cleanup. Since 2/3rds of the Adesso Man team prefer to grow out their facial hair, we have spent a lot of time testing grooming products, tools, and routines for fuller, softer, and healthier beards. Here's what we've learned over the years:

GET THE RIGHT TOOLS

In order to get a precise trim, you'll need to invest in a few grooming tools:

  • a beard comb helps to comb hairs into place and distribute oils. Can also be used to help snip any stray hairs that stand out or hang over the lip
  • a beard brush helps to distribute oils, exfoliate the skin underneath your beard, and remove any debris or dandruff
  • facial hair scissors are great for cleaning up stray hairs and trimming your mustache
  • a beard trimmer with multiple guards heads maintains an even, desired length and can be used to fade the beard neckline and clean up cheek lines

REMEMBER THESE TIPS

  1. Wash and dry your beard before trimming. Never trim your facial hair while it is wet or damp
  2. Before you start trimming, give your beard a quick brush to highlight any inconsistencies in length
  3. Pay attention to the length of your trimmer guard, since they vary from device to device. A “1” doesn't always mean “1mm”, sometimes it means 1/4"
  4. If you are growing your beard out, trim it into place as it grows to avoid any awkward length. Maintaining the neck and cheek lines is what gives your beard its intentional shape
  5. You can always cut more hair off but you can add any back, so trim slowly with a higher guard head until you reach your desired length
  6. To trim your mustache, comb the hair over your upper lip and snip away anything that covers the lip
  7. Comb or brush your beard into place and do one final check to see if you missed anything

DON'T FORGET THE NECKLINE

Trimming your neckline is quite easy and shows that you are serious about maintaining a well-groomed beard. Here's how you do it:

  1. Place your index and middle finger above your Adam’s apple

  2. With those two fingers, draw a "U" shaped line upward towards your ears

  3. Shave everything—yes, everything—below this spot while ensuring the hair still wraps around the jawline and underside of your chin

HOW TO KEEP YOUR BEARD SOFT

You aren't finished yet. The last step to grooming your beard is styling it with products that keep it soft and hydrated. Here's what you'll need:
