AN AFTERNOON WITH SHON NODA, CO-FOUNDER OF MANDAY GROOMING
Shon Noda is the co-founder and owner of Manday Grooming Inc. — a Calgary-based natural and cruelty-free line of skincare made from organically-grown hemp in small batches. Manday Grooming began as a hobby in 2016, when Shon and Evan Ward set out on a quest to create a better pomade than what was currently offered. They sold their pomade and body soap at a local Christmas market and received an outstanding response from the community. The great feedback combined with lots of late nights grew Manday into a full-fledged business.
Every aspect of the brand, from formulas to the design on the labels, are developed by Shon and Evan. They created an open dialogue with their customers so they can continue to grow and improve based on what their clients want and need. Their dedication to making people feel and look their best really resonates with us with the #adessoman lifestyle. Not only did we launch our brand on the same basis but we also found our roots in Calgary's local market scene.
We wanted to learn more about a day in the life of Shon so we invited him to the shop for a quick Q&A.
What three things do you need to make it through the day?
Coffee, coffee, and more coffee
How would you describe your personal style and what are your go-to shopping spots?
I’m a big fan of graphic tees and raw denim, but I also have a flair for the dramatics. My go-to shopping spots are Supreme menswear, Gravity Pope, Adesso, and local markets.
What are some of your favourite but most unfashionable clothing items?
A pair of Dickies overalls and a Hemingway t-shirt
Running your own business can get pretty hectic so what do you like to do to relax?
I like to spend time with my family and friends. My perspective is that we work to live, not the other way around.
What does it mean to be your true, authentic self?
I believe everyone has multiple “voices” within them. Your mind, your heart, your body, and soul all have a say in who you and what you should be doing. Finding a path where those voices all sing in the same key or speak the same words means you are traveling down the right path. The difficult part is finding and hearing those voices.
What are your three tips for living the best life you possibly can?
- Everything in moderation, including moderation.
- Shit happens but all you can do is acknowledge the problem, find a solution, and move on. Life is too short to spend focusing on something that you can’t change.
- Progress over perfection. It is important to constantly move forward. Yes, there may be setbacks and obstacles, but you can’t let those issues halt your development. You need to continue to move forward and trend upward! Whatever you strive to do in life, make sure it embodies quality.
