Staying in on New Year's Eve? Here are 5 movies to get you in the party mood

Staying in this New Year's Eve? We don't blame you. The holidays are exhausting with tons of expectations placed upon them, including ringing in 2020 with too-much champagne, your entire Facebook friend list, and a midnight kiss. Ring in the new year with these 5 films and your favourite pair of sweatpants.

1. When Harry Met Sally

Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan during the New Year's Eve scene in When Harry Met Sally

The embodiment of all our New Year's Eve dreams, When Harry Met Sally is a slow-burn rom-com about two people, played by Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, falling in love over the course of several years. It ends with a climactic New Year's kiss which may be one of the most romantic smooches of all time.

2. Saturday Night Fever

Live vicariously through John Travolta's disco banger, Saturday Night Fever that looks at partying as a weapon of social change. A total blast from the past, this '70s film is sure to lift your spirits.

3. Snowpiercer

Chris Evans in Snowpiercer - he is walking in a large group of people, in what seems to be a standoff with an enemy group

If rom-coms and discos aren't really your thing, might we suggest a post-apocalyptic adventure featuring bearded Chris Evans and the strangest New Year's celebration ever filmed? We're talking about Snowpiercer, a completely unforgettable movie that takes place entirely on a train and is full of bizarre plot twists to keep you fully enthralled until midnight.

4. Ocean's 11

The cast of Ocean's 11

What better way to celebrate the New Year than with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Dean Martin, and Danny Ocean — the OG, pre-Clooney Ocean crew. Their casino heist takes place on New Year's Eve, but as is the series legacy, there is a major plot twist the moment the clock strikes 12.

5. 200 Cigarettes

Move over Ashton Kutcher and Taylor Swift, 200 Cigarettes is the '90s equivalent to New Year's Eve but better. Courtney Love, Paul Rudd, Ben Affleck, and Kate Hudson are a group of twenty-somethings trying to cope with relationships, loneliness, desire, and their individual neuroses. It's the perfect blend of holiday sorrow and joy.
