Happy new decade, everyone! We're excited to see where the next year, and ten, will lead. But instead of writing out a list of intentions or resolutions, and then losing focus by mid-March, we've made a commitment to improving these four categories of our lives in 2020: caring more, giving more, accomplishing more, and enjoying more. Here's why.
1. THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF CARE
When we're running on empty, it's hard enough to care about your own needs let alone the needs of another person. The longer the to-do list, the less time there is to recuperate which eventually results in burnout. No matter how hard you try, the negative side of prolonged and excessive stress will eventually spill into every area of your life and can have damaging consequences.
You need to take better care of your health in order to effectively accomplish your goals, maintain relationships, and have fun. Self-care looks different for everyone — exercising, eating more fiber, paying your bills, sleeping in, drinking water — but in a nutshell, it's about slowing down and catching your breath.
2. GIVING BACK TO OTHERS
Our self-esteem and sense of purpose in life increase tenfold when we help others. It's the entire reason we founded Adesso — to help men look and feel their best, and build community. In 2019, we formed charitable collaborations with Dress for Success Calgary and Classroom Champions with proceeds going to empower women and children.

3. LESS IS MORE
Regardless of your belief in New Year's resolutions or goals, this is a category that affects us all. Instead of burning yourself out trying to accomplish a list of unrealistic, hyper-productive goals, focus on what means the most to you. Perhaps it's spending less time online and more time with your loved ones or paying off your credit card. Regardless of the end-result, choosing one or two meaningful goals and then creating clear objectives is much more achievable than trying to do everything at once.
4. HAVE FUN MORE OFTEN
How often do you plan for having fun? Is it the occasional long weekend or your yearly vacation? While we tend to spend the first half of the new year focusing on crushing our goals, and the other half feeling shame over giving up, we rarely make having fun a priority. Limit your screen-time, stop replying to emails after 5 pm, take the weekend off, go on fifteen road trips. Everything will work itself out so make 2020 the year you stop taking everything so seriously.
